The reader
This page is for the adult who writes the assignment. Students still need the responsible-use practice note. This page is about the incentive structure. If the fastest path to a grade is an unlabeled paste, the ethics lecture will lose.
Three design moves
Label. Any kept generated sentence is marked as generated, with the date and the prompt job (wording, counter-argument, example). Unlabeled fluency is treated as incomplete work, not as cleverness.
Forbid with examples. The assignment names two forbidden pastes in the context of this task: another student’s paragraph, and any record that identifies a third person. Abstract “be ethical” lines do not bite.
Grade the refusal. One scored item is a refusal note: a shortcut the student did not take, and why. If that item is missing, the ethics strand did not run, even if the essay looks clean.
What is not an ethics outcome
A classroom poster. A signed honor code that is never referenced in marking. A generated “reflection” on integrity. Those objects can exist; they do not replace the three moves.
Adults have a negative duty too
Mentors and parents who complete the explanation for the student are running the same shortcut the assignment forbids. HNK’s public standard is that the student keeps the pen. That is an ethics rule, not a branding line.
