insight / HNK · noticing

The first literacy skill is stopping.

Incomprehension has a sound: a sentence that slides. The student who can name the slide can still learn. The student who talks over it cannot.

The reader

This page is for the student in the first weeks of a cycle, and for the adult who keeps interrupting the silence. Later weeks belong to explanation cards and transfer. This week belongs to the stop.

What noticing looks like on paper

A limitation log. Date. The generated sentence. The word you cannot define without a slogan. The thing the sentence cannot know. Eight entries beat one essay. If you have no entries, you have not been looking; you have been collecting.

The slide

Fluent emptiness has tells: adjectives with no unit, citations with no page, “studies show” with no study, a definition that is only a synonym. Circle those. Circling is the work. Explaining comes after you have something to explain.

Adults: do not fill the pause

When a student stops, the helpful instinct is to reopen the tool or to supply a better sentence. That instinct trains dependence. Ask instead: which word is decorative? Then wait. The wait is instructional.

When noticing is finished enough to move on

When the student can, without looking, name one limit of the last generated paragraph and one term they still cannot define. That is the gate to the explanation-before-tools page. There is no badge for the gate.

This page is method writing from HNK Institute. It describes a teaching practice. It does not report measured learning gains, partner logos, enrollment dates, or awards. Owner confirmation on 2026-10-04 covers that the practice operates and that info@hnk.org exists; it does not cover any number on this page because this page publishes none.
